Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine the biological value of manganese (Mn) using bioassay evaluations in the tibia bone and blood of broiler chickens. Six different Mn sources were tested, including manganese oxide with purities of 35% (at 400, 800 mg/ kg), 25% (400, 800 mg/kg), 45-55% (400, 800 mg/kg), 30% (400, 800 mg/kg), 40% (800 mg/kg), and manganese sulfate (800 mg/kg). A control group without Mn supplementation was also included. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design using 600 one day old Ross 308 broiler chicks, assigned to 11 treatments with 6 replicates each. All diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, with similar levels of metabolizable energy, crude protein, and other nutrients. Different supplementation levels of a given Mn source did not have a significant effect on blood concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, or manganese. However, the type of Mn supplementation significantly affected blood calcium and manganese levels (P<0.05), whereas its effect on blood phosphorus was not significant. Both the source and level of Mn supplementation had a significant impact on tibial manganese concentration (P<0.05). The highest relative bioavailability of mineral manganese oxide was observed for sources 2 (25% purity), while the lowest was associated with source 3 (45-55% purity, P<0.05). Overall, the relative bioavailability of different manganese oxide and sulfate mineral sources varied and could influence biological indices in broiler chickens.
